Give Comics another Chance.

I’m a very big fan of comics. One reason in particular, story. Recently some of the more non-traditional comics have been converted into film. Sin City, 300, V for Vendetta, and 30 Days of Night are all comics that were turned into movies. Good movies at that, I like to think it’s because they already had a visual guideline. If you look at the cinematography of Sin City, 30 Days of Night and 300 in particular, there isn’t a bad shot in the entire film. I believe this is because they already had the visuals for the film before hand.
Over the years, comics have become more diverse in their offerings for people. With the rise of web comics, new venues have arisen for emerging comics as well. Once reserved for men in tights fighting to save the world, comics now offer a wide array of fantasy, horror, drama, and comedy for the eager reader who is willing to look for it.
I personally recommend Dr. McNinja from drmcninja.com for those online looking for an outrageous laugh, another standard six panel comic strip is Hare Lip located at filtercarb.com (co-written by yours truly). Be prepared it’s definitely a very goofy series.
If you’re tastes run a little more to the horror genre, then might I suggest the Walking Dead published by Image. They are currently publishing monthly issues and are also available in collected volumes. This is definitely a very George Romero zombie tale, but instead of ending like the time constrained films it takes a prolonged look at the struggles and battles to survive in a world overrun by the dead.
Any of the Aspen comics (Fathom, Soulfire, etc) are good fantasy comics, also some might want to try the long-running elfquest or Warlands for a good fantasy tale.
That being said surf through some web comics, you may be surprised at what you find. If you don’t want to take a look at the graphic novels that are offered in your local book store then copy and paste the following link to check out web comics by genre. You never know what you might just find out there. I know I didn’t.
